GeoPlatform.gov NDSA Discussion Use Cases—AKA: conference presenter’s dilemma What online starting point provides each of these roles/organizations sufficient education and seamless, unhindered empowerment to determine what to “do” without having to wade through “reference” information on any given site? What’s the “elevator speech” all of us should be able to give to anyone? By role: GIS Analyst (urgent?) Spatial data creator (urgent?) Archivist Librarian Archive/library leader (policy) GIS organization leader (policy) more? By organization: GIS shop GIS clearinghouse State archive State library State agency Local government University Federal agency Federal library Federal archive more?

GeoPlatform.gov NDSA Discussion Spatial Data Archiving Community option “Welcome to our Community” Options: “GIS Data Archiving” “GIS Data Preservation” “Geospatial Data Archiving” “Geospatial Data Preservation” Paragraph of explanatory text with the compelling reason to archive and how to get started The home page “noun” approach (below) may a more helpful. Aggregate information by type of seeker—get them to the essential information quickly. Later they may peruse more information
GeoPlatform.gov NDSA Discussion Another option: Resources link Not associated with a “community”
GeoPlatform.gov NDSA Discussion Risks • Use overload if “one central place” is used. • Dependent on third party tools? (Drupel and ESRI ArcGIS online for map gallery?) • What is the federal government commitment to this tool/website over time? Say, 50 years from now? • What’s the commitment from the feds to migrate content as web technology/tools advance? • DOI makes the platform (sandbox) and rules, sets expectations, service level agreements details, etc. They create Drupel templates (open source content management system) but then hand the keys over. Hand accounts to that community (we would have control—a plus). However, seems like someone or some organization would still have to be the administrator • Who or which group would own this community? Ensure it’s relevance, currentness? Jerry (DOI) is heard saying in the webinar something to the effect: ‘Later, the community name can be searched on “we just need to get the community stewards to do it” • Seems to be a focus on federal or nation-wide data, maps, etc. Something to consider since archiving happens at the state, institution, and perhaps local level
GeoPlatform.gov NDSA Discussion Decisions • A) Use the Community option? • Yes • What are the specific goals? • Use just as an information clearinghouse and community? (i.e. no duplication—points to others’ web pages? • Add content and maybe later more functions such as archival metadata harvesting, data hosting in the cloud, etc., as the Platform matures? (Risk: would a dependency on federal government choices, third party software, etc. be acceptable?) • Who or which organization administers it? • No • Do any of the identified existing resources (geopreservation.org, GeoMAPP) already feel committed to serving as this central information clearinghouse role? • B) Use the Resources option only? • C) Use a combination of Community and Resources? • D) Other option such as geopreservation.org, GeoMAPP, etc.
