Strengthening the safety net Using EN to empower supporters locallySarah Wayman & Jacq McNeeThe Children’s Society THURSDAY 20 JUNE EN CONFERENCE 2019
What’s the issue? The safety net is at risk • THERE’S A LOT OF BLEAK RIGHT NOW • Universal Credit • Insecure employment • Housing costs increasing CRISIS SUPPORT IS IN CRISIS • I in 7 schemes have closed • Two-thirds cut or scrapped • Councils have lost 60p in every £1 AND THIS IMPACTS ON CHILDREN • Lower wellbeing EVENT TITLE HERE IN CAPS
What did we need to do? Strengthen the safety net – locally and nationally LOCAL • 152 councils all with very different schemes – some none at all • Establish an agreed set of standards for crisis support • Work with wider providers of crisis support • Protect schemes where they are at risk NATIONAL • Ensure Local Welfare Assistance Schemes (LWAS) get the resource needed in the Comprehensive Spending Review (update – now delayed!) • Push this up the agenda nationally – highlight how important this little-known source of support is EVENT TITLE HERE IN CAPS
What have we done so far? Building Networks • Can’t do this on our own – working with other charities that care about this issue • Amplifying messages Engaging local decision makers • Campaigners and public affairs team • Briefings • Letter writing Engagement • Outreach to churches • Podcast • Handraisers on social media EVENT TITLE HERE IN CAPS
How has EN helped us? TAILORED LOCAL ASKS TO LAs • Based on FOI data • Post-election in councils where ruling party has changed • Reference data • District and county-specific messaging – reflecting a complex system SHARING CONTENT • Campaigners could send podcast to their councillors as well as listening to it • Then, local elections put a freeze on things… EVENT TITLE HERE IN CAPS
What do we have planned next? WRITING TO MPs • Copying in councillors – influencing locally and nationally MEDIA ACTION • Supporters writing to their local paper about the issue BISHOPS • Bishops writing individually and collectivley to put pressure on decision makers • SOCIAL MEDIA • Handraisers • Targeted facebook ads EVENT TITLE HERE IN CAPS
