DRAWSTRING BAG INSTRUCTIONSREAD THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY AND CHECK OFF EACH STEP AS YOU COMPLETE IT BEFORE GOING ON TO THE NEXT STEP • Measure and tear fabric so that it is a 12” x 18” rectangle. You will also need to tear a 2 1/2” x 24” piece of fabric for the drawstring. • Turn fabric so that the top edge of the bag is closest to you (as in the diagram). Be sure that the fabric is RIGHT SIDE UP. Using a ruler and a marking pencil, draw a line 1” from the edge and another line 2” from the top edge (the one closest to you. • Fold the bag from left to right. On the torn edge, measure up 3” and 3 3/4” from the top edge. Mark these points with a 1” long line. • Pin the bag together as it is folded, making sure that the top (where you drew the long lines) is NOT pinned. Stitch a 5/8” seam beginning at the bottom of the bag, pivoting at the corner (Remember to backstitch when you start). Stitch to the first mark. Backstitch, lift the presser foot, and slide the fabric to just past (1/4”) the second marking. Backstitch to the mark, then stitch forward to the edge. End with a backstitch. • Finish the drawstring bag edges with a zig zag to prevent fraying. Only stitch on the edges where you did the straight stitching. DO NOT stitch where you left the 3/4” opening.
With your scissors, clip to BUT NOT THROUGH the stitching at the small opening for the drawstring. Press open. • Fold top edge of the wrong side on the 2” line. Pin as in the diagram. Turn right side out. Check to make sure that folded section completely covers the drawstring hole. Stitch along the 1” line. Stitch again with the presser foot guiding along the zig-zagged edge. Turn right side out • To make the drawstring, fold and pin the fabric lengthwise, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER. Sew a 1/4” seam, leaving one end open. Turn right side out. • Roll the seam between your fingers until it is exactly on the edge. Press. • Using a decorative stitch of your choice, top stitch the drawstring on both edges, guiding along the inside toe of the presser foot. • Using a safety pin, insert the drawstring into casing. Tie the ends of the drawstring in a knot top keep the string from coming out of the casing. • Put your name on a piece of masking tape, attach it to your finished bag, and turn in.
