World Book Day A report by P7A
Every year we celebrate World Book Day by inviting ‘Reading Champions’ into our school to read to us. We also dress us as a character from a book which is a lot of fun. • This year, we started organising the day by brainstorming a list of people who we would like to invite. Our teacher helped us to find contact details for these people and we sent them emails. Luckily for us lots of people could come along.
Whole School Assembly • Our guest wasMichelle McManus. She is a singer who won a very popular television show called ‘Pop Idol’. After she won she had a number one single and became very famous in the UK. We asked Michelle to read at a P4 – P7 assembly. She chose the book ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S Lewis and she read it to us very well. She told us she read all of the books in the series when she was our age and she called herself a ‘bookworm’. Michelle then invited questions and a boy called Nathan in P6 asked her if she would sing. She wasn’t prepared for this so she sang a cappella and we were not disappointed! We quickly realised she has a fabulous voice and we could understand why she won the show.
Afterwards she went to visit P7B and after they had asked her about her favourite books and authors, all they wanted to know was about all the famous people she has met such as Elton John and HRH the Prince of Wales.
The Five Thirty Show • We also invited three TV presenters from a programme called ‘The Five Thirty Show.’ This is a TV programme which is on weeknights and three presenters came along to visit us. Their names are Rachel McTavish, Gerry McCulloch and Vicky Lee. They went to visit P5B and two P6 classes. That night on the programme Rachel McTavish talked about her day in Holy Cross Primary and she even showed some photos. We were really pleased to be on the TV! Gerry McCulloch is coming back next week to do a feature with the P2 children so Holy Cross will get to be on TV again.
Kieron and Kim from P7B were greeting all our guests and asking them to sign our memo board. In this photo, they are meeting Rachel McTavish. This is Vicky Lee reading a book to P6b.
P5A were visited by a lady called Lisa Gardner. She is an actress on a soap TV programme called River City. The P5 children really enjoyed meeting her and she read her favourite book ‘The Worst Witch’. Lisa Gardner who plays a character called ‘Jo Rossi’ in the TV programme River City.
Our class (P7A) were visited by Des Clarke who is a TV presenter, comedian and he also presents a radio programme every morning too. He read a funny story called ‘Merry Mr Meddle’ by Enid Blyton. We loved all his funny voices and sound effects. He told us he enjoys reading all kinds of books and has many favourite authors. He also told us that he needs to read for his job as it is important for him to learn new information all the time.
Des Clarke signs our Guest Board. We thought he was very funny.
Our infant classes were visited by Drama students from the Nautical College, a further education institute, and pupils from Holyrood Secondary School which is the Secondary school we will go to next year. They dressed up as a character from a book and read a story. We also invited people from the local community such as Father Neil, our parish priest. Mrs Robinson who is mum to a boy called Liam in P4 and the chair of the Parent Council. We invited local shopkeepers in too.
Here are some photos of the pupils who dressed up (some of our teachers dressed up too) Miss Collins is the P4 teacher. She dressed up as Minnie Mouse… so did one of the children in her class!
This is a superhero, a pirate and James Bond. There are lots more photos of the day and you can see them on our school website which we update all the time. http://www.holycross-pri.glasgow.sch.uk/ It was a fabulous day and we really enjoyed ourselves. By P7a
