2-1: Earth’s Crust in Motion Stress force that acts on rock changes rock’s shape & volume adds energy to rock energy stored in rock rock breaks OR changes shape shaking & trembling due to movement beneath surface • Earthquake
3 Types of Stress • 1. shearing • 2. tension • 3. compression • pushes in 2 opposite directions • s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s rock (gets thinner in middle) • squeezes rock until it folds or breaks
Deformation • Fault • 3 types of fault • 1. strike-slip fault • 2. normal fault 3. reverse fault • Any change in volume of shape of Earth’s crust • Occurs s-l-o-w-l-y – over millions of years • Caused by slow shift of Earth’s plates • a break in Earth’s crust • where slabs of rock slip past each other • up • down • sideways • usually occur near plate boundaries • caused by shearing (can be a transform boundary) • caused by tension • caused by compression
3 Types of Fault Caused by Shearing Caused by Compression Caused by Tension
Don’t get Faults and Stresses mixed up with Plate Boundaries! (Three of each!) Divergent Convergent Transform
