  3. ANTI-FEDERALISTS • Scared of strong national govt. - wanted state govts. to be stronger - demanded a BILL OF RIGHTS!!

  4. So Madison… delivers a Bill of Rights to be added to the Constitution. Bill of Rights are 10 amendments to the Constitution that lists those things the govt. cannot do to the people. They “insure” the people’s rights not to be abused by the govt.

  5. 1st Amendment Guarantees the right of: freedom of speech freedom of religion freedom of the press freedom to petition the govt. (address) freedom to peaceable assemble (protest)

  6. 2nd Amendment Right to bear arms!! Can have a weapon if properly licensed and permitted.

  7. 3rd Amendment No quartering of troops!! Do not have to put up military in your house.

  8. 4th Amendment No illegal search and seizure…with a warrant!

  9. 5th Amendment Due process! Double-jeopardy! No self-incrimination! (I plea the 5th!)

  10. 6th Amendment Fair and speedy trial! Right to counsel!

  11. 7th Amendment Trial by jury!

  12. 8th Amendment No cruel and unusual punishment! No excessive bail/fine!

  13. 9th Amendment Rights not listed will not be denied to the people!

  14. 10th Amendment Rights not listed will be left up to the states!
