  2. The Issue: Childhood Obesity and Access to the outdoor Activity • Childhood Obesity: • Child and adolescent obesity has increased. • Multitude of contributing factors. • Outdoor Access • Time spent outdoors has decreased. • Barriers to outdoor physical activity

  3. My Interest in the Issue • SLU Nutrition and Dietetic Student • SLU’s Wilderness Adventure Club- Member and President • Exposure to St. Louis schools and students

  4. The Bright Ideas Grant- Spring 2012 • Grant award program at SLU • Creation of the Wilderness Adventure Buddies • Planning of the program and events. • Collaboration with Marian Middle School • Financial support, program guidance and workshops.

Wilderness Adventure Buddies: Past Events: Fall Saturday day hike • Marian Middle School • Fall Academic Saturday: • Saturday October 20th, 2012 • 5th- 8th Graders – 60 students • Wilderness Adventure Club Volunteers • Mastodon State Park, Imperial, MO • Clovis History Museum, • Leave No Trace workshop • Hiking and field games

Wilderness Adventure Buddies: Additional Events • Volunteer at Shaw Nature Reserve • 6th Grade Class • Meet up for their field trip. • Indoor Rock Climbing - Climb So iLL Gym • 8th grade Class • Volunteers belayed and worked with students to rock climb. • Focus on physical activity and achieving goals • Spring Trail Running Club • Tower Grove Park • Castlewood State Park

Wilderness Adventure Buddies: Future Plans • Marian Middle School • Indoor Rock Climbing • Trail Running • Outdoor Education • Provide Information on outdoor activity opportunities • Additional Organizations • City Gardens School • After school programs • Overnight Camping and Hiking Trip • Dream goal

Impact • Provide outdoor physical activities and experiences • Increase interest and exposure • Lead to outdoor activity outside of the program • Instill an interest and desire at a young age. • Mentorship and companions with students • Unique, meaningful relationships formed through outdoor activities • Benefits the students and the Buddy mentors
