Program History • National Headquarters in Arlington, VA • Organization Federally chartered by Congress in 1962 • One unit in currently in Iowa, formed in January 2002 • Local units led and managed by volunteers
Program Costs • $94.50 to enroll for one year which includes uniform name tapes • Uniforms are issued free of charge for use while in program • $53 to re-enroll in future years
Central Iowa Division Points of Pride • Well-trained, professional cadet corps • Many former cadets in college • Over 100 former cadets in military service • Command Excellence Award yearly since 2004 • National Unit Commendation Award yearly since 2006 • Top Inspection score of any Midwest unit • One of the largest units in the nation
What Do We Do? • Wide variety of adventure and military activities • Privilege of wearing US Navy uniforms • Summer Training Experiences • Develop Leadership Skills • Learn marketable skills • Community Service • Work hard and have a good time!
What We are About • Among the best youth development programs available to kids • Develop confidence, respect for others and self, self-discipline, technical skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills • Provide interesting, interactive, challenging, hands-on activities
What We Are NOT About • Not a correctional “boot camp” program • Not equipped to deal with highly oppositional youth or youth with authority problems • Not a babysitting service • Not about building a false sense of self-esteem • Not about creating false expectations

Opportunities in Sea Cadets • New Skills, self-confidence, self-discipline, and a legitimate sense of accomplishment • Weekend drill activities • Summer training opportunities • Travel • Make friends, meet youth with similar interests • Recognition for accomplishments • Awareness of scholarships/opportunities for Academy appointments • Enlist at an advanced pay grade
Membership Requirements • Satisfactory school • No felony convictions; no substance use; • Willingness to train and accept legitimate authority • DESIRE TO BELONG & MOTIVATION TO SUCCEED—can’t be just mom or dad’s idea
Cadet Commitment • Wear the uniform correctly • Follow orders • Attend regularly • Community/unit involvement • Meet grooming requirements • Be on time or early • Be motivated to grow, accept challenges with enthusiasm
