What is NEXRAD? • What is NEXRAD ? • NEXRAD stands for Next-Generation Radar • It is a network of 159 high-resolution Doppler weather radars operated by the National Weather Service.
How it works… • These 159 radars, with a range of 140 miles, are set up all throughout the states. • Each of these radars detect precipitation, its intensity, and its movement. This happens through computers analyzing the strength of the returned pulse, time it took to travel to the object and back, and phase shift of the pulse. • The sending and returning of the waves happen about 1300 times a second.
Pros: We can use the data to predict the weather • Cons: Constantly uses much electricity and adds, although relatively negligible, to the taxes that U.S. citizens pay.
