Subject & Grade Level This unit will be used in a 4th grade classroom. It is an interdisciplinary Unit that explores the diversity of our planet’s oceans. The curriculum primarily addresses art and social sciences.

What are the levels of the ocean? What is a food chain? How does the ocean affect people? How do people affect the ocean? What are some myths associated with the ocean? What are tides? How does the ocean affect weather in different regions? How does the environment affect people?
Oregon State Standards for fourth grade Social Science, Art & Language • SS.05.GE.04.01 The Student will be able to identify and locate major landforms, bodies of water, vegetation, and climate found in the regions of the United States. • SS.05.GE.07.Understand how physical environment are affected by human activities. • AR.05.CP.01Use experiences, imagination, observations, essential elements and organizational principles to achieve a desired affect when creating, presenting, and or performing works of art. • AR.05.HC.04 Describe how the arts serve a variety of purposes and needs in other communities and cultures • EL.04.LI.01 Listen to text and read text to make connections and respond to a wide variety of significant works of literature, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and drama, form a variety of cultures and time periods that enhance the study of other subjects • EL.04.RE.03 Listen to, read, and understand a wide variety of informational and narrative text, including classic and contemporary literature, poetry, magazines, newspapers, references materials, and online information.
Learning Objectives Students will be able to: • The Student will be able to able to find on a map and name the different oceans of the world. • The student will also be able to understand how people affect the Ocean and its inhabitants, and how it affects humans. • Also, understand the importance of our oceans in relation to the job market and economic development. • Be able to name several different species that live in the ocean. • Be able to identify what causes tides and the weather affecting the ocean. • Being able to represent ideas in a constructive way using diagrams, pictures, and models. • Understand what makes a healthy ocean and its importance.
