Preface (What is Ecology?) Ecology is the science of how living things arerelated to their environment. The word environment means simply what is around us. Some people live in a town environment; for others, their environment is the countryside. But the air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk the water we drink are all part of the environment. Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve the environmental problems that endanger people’s lives. If people want to survive they must solve these problems quickly. Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole earth.
Problems of Ecology. • The most serious environmental problems are: 1).Pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution); 2).Noise from cars, buses, planes, etc.; 3).Destruction of wildlife and the beauty of the countryside; 4).Shortage of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel); 5).The growth of population. 6).Endanger species, animals which are almost extinct.
What we can do to solve the environmental problems. • 1. Walk or use a bicycle instead of going by car. • 2. Don’t litter with paper, cans or bottles. • 3. Recycle used materials such as metal, bottles and paper. • 4. Plant more trees. 5. Feed birds in winter and help them survive in the cold. 6. Save energy. Use less electricity and gas. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. 7. Clear rubbish from lakes and rivers. 8. Have showers, not baths. Showers use less water.
Interesting fact about Ecology Annually, the number of the population of the whole world increases on 90 million people. This means that each second on the Land will be born 3 persons. The cans from secondary aluminum on 60 % cheaper than glass bottles. For instance, in Sweden’s collect and melt down 70 % all cans. American offices throw away enough paper every year to build a wall 12feet high across the country. But, right now, we save 200 million of paper a year by recycling. 97% of our wildflower meadows destroyed since World War II.
