Current technologies are expensive and inefficient • Expensive filters need regular maintenance and can only operate in a limited temperature range • Backpressure caused by filters can cause up to a 10% increase in fuel consumption. • Trade off between PM and NOx emissions levels • Current electrostatic precipitation (ESP) technologies have efficiency minima for nano-sized particles.
