Project Strategies Natalie Hoopes Erica Kontson Elizabeth McClure
Defining the Problem • High alloy steel is not being separated properly • There are contaminates in the steel, which can cause off-chemistry heats • ArcelorMittal has to deal with these contaminated steel scraps that come into their company and it takes away from the quality of the steel • Determine the chemical composition of molten iron
What we need to do • A new separation technique needs to be implemented so there will not be off-chemistry heats -Might be carried out properly through each stage of recycling the steel -Deciding who is responsible for the separation (other than ArcelorMittal) -Encourage de-coating techniques to get rid of contamination -Test the chemical makeup of the incoming scrap -
Solution Strategies • Start at the car companies • Assemble the car with specific alloys that are marked properly to show the chemical composition • Create a sample testing • Disassemble the car, separate different types of steel before shredding into smaller components • Create areas especially designed for recycling • Transfer separated steels to the next step of the reusing process
Solution Strategies cont. • At the recycling location, assign the responsibility of further testing and separating of the steel • Spectrometers to measure the chemical composition • After this, separated steels will be sent to ArcelorMittal • Alternative: have ArcelorMittal implement the recycling and separation process • Spend money to gain money (incentive)
