RISE Year 1: Research with the Wachsman Group Researching Solid Oxide Fuel Cells By Katherine Atwater Background: • SOFCs • Anode, electrolyte, cathode • Converts fuel into electricity • Currently requires high temperatures to function. • Research Goal: to decrease the operation temperature and improve energy production. Research: • Improving the performance of SOFCs • Synthesizing ESB and other electrolyte materials • Testing the performance of these materials • Designing set up for resistivity measurements • Resistivity measurements of Mn1.5Co1.5O4 contact layer Relation to RISE: • Helped further the research in the laboratory • Learned how to work on a team with graduate and undergraduate students • Applied leadership skills to helping the lab run smoothly and aiding others in their research • Learned how to design and troubleshoot testing instruments • Furnace, set up, and Mn1.5Co1.5O4 sample for resistivity testing. • 4-point probe test at 450-700°C • Expect to see lower resistance at higher temperatures
