App Showcase Our Future Fundamentals An Overview
The Fundamentals • Touch and hold to move apps, or delete apps. • Move an app on top of another app to make a folder. • Double tap the home key, and swipe to the right to lock rotation. • Airplane Mode = BIG iPod Touch. • Join free Wi-Fi to keep your costs down. • If you don’t like the way the iPad or an app does something look in the setting first. • Double tap the word you want to select. • Use the dialog bubble to cut, copy, paste, define, select, or BIU. • BIU = Bold, Italics, Underline. • Use the selection handles to refine your selection.
Wi-Fi Finder • Uses the GPS in your iPad to show you the location of near by places with Wi-Fi. • Wi-Fi is faster, and less expensive than your cellular data connection. • Use Wi-Fi for large files like music, movies, TV shows, YouTube, etc.
Dropbox • Free cloud based file storage area. • Files are accessible from Mac’s, PC’s, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android. • By creating shared folders other Dropbox users can access your files. • Move files that are too large to email into a Public Folder and Email a link instead.
Evernote • Free cloud based storage area. • Notes are accessible from Mac’s, PC’s, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android. • By creating shared folders other Evernote users can access your notes. • Excellent for writing Drafts, or as a storage place for research.
Calendar/Contacts • These are NOT Apple specific apps. • They can display data from iCloud, Google, Yahoo, Exchange, etc. • Create a “team” calendar and contacts that every member of the “team” then accesses and updates.
MS Office Documents • Currently there is no app that is a 100% replacement for Office. • Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are Apples answer to Office. • They DO NOT have feature parity with Office. • They will read and write Office documents, BUT there are caveats.
MS Office Documents CloudOn • Cloud based, virtualized version of MS Office. • Free, BUT for how long? • MUST BE connected to the internet in order to use it. • Ugly MS interface that has been “expanded” for touch use.
MS Office Documents • Rumored to be released in November. • “Microsoft ... has an internal effort to develop a version of Office for the iPad, though it is not clear when it plans to releases the software, several people with knowledge of the project have said. Microsoft will not confirm the effort.” www.nytimes.com/2012/07/17/technology/microsoft-unveils-touch-based-version-of-office.html
iBooks • Not JUST for reading your favorite novels. • Acts as a repository/reader for all your e-Pub documents and more importantly PDF’s.
The Cost of Paper • 28% of all paper produced is consumed in document production. www.greenamerica.org/PDF/PaperFacts.pdf • 53.870 Billion pounds of paper. • 16 Billion pounds of paper used in document production in offices. • At an average wholesale price of $1080/ton, office paper costs $8,616,240,000. www.risiinfo.com/Marketing/EA/ExcerptsforWeb/Ptrd0111.pdf
The Cost of Paper • “With iPad, we get rid of that big 45-pound bag. Being able to take all those books and charts and bring it down to about a pound and a half is incredible.” • “With iPad we’re able to save 16 million sheets of paper a year. Just removing the weight of that paper works out to 326,000 gallons of fuel saved per year.” www.apple.com/ipad/business/profiles/united-airlines/ • $1,825,000 in fuel saved, buys 3,658 iPads www.globalair.com/airport/region.aspx
How Can You Eliminate Paper? • Convert manuals to electronic form • Wiki’s and Blog’s • iBook Author • PDF’s
Travel Apps If It’s Travel Related... There’s An App
The “Cloud” is Real • Requires ubiquitous wireless network connections. • Whether you like it or not, you will use it. • Just because you use it doesn't mean you have to trust it.
The 800 Pound Infant • The iPad is estimated at having about 70% of the market. • 17 million were sold last quarter. • 225,000 apps. • ONLY 2 YEARS OLD!!!!!
A Final Thought “When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks. But as people moved more towards urban centers, people started to get into cars. I think PCs are going to be like trucks. Less people will need them. And this transformation is going to make some people uneasy…”
Thank You All applications can be found in the iTunes App Store on your iPad This presentation can be downloaded at www.personalmacgeniuses.com/2012/08/02/hhmi-ipad-presentation/
