6.1 Solving Equation Using Models • Order of operations to solve equations is: Brackets Exponents Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction
6.1 Solving Equation Using Models • To rearrange an equation do the opposite: Subtraction Addition Multiplication Division Exponents Brackets SAMDEB
6.1 Solving Equation Using Models • The two sides of an equation must remain the same. Whatever you do to one side you MUST do to the other side. Balance Scale Model
6.1 Solving Equation Using Models An equation is balanced when both sides have the same value. That is obvious in these cases because both sides are identical. Obviously one blue square equals one blue square. When a red oval is added to each side they stay balanced. When the one on the right has a red oval removed it stays balanced. Addition Subtraction
6.1 Solving Equation Using Models When the one blue square on the left is multiplied by three on both sides each side stays balanced because they both have 3 blue squares. When the one on the right is divided by three it changes to one blue square and stays balanced. Multiplication Division
Solve 2x – 3 = 3 Get the blue X by themselves. Add 3 to each side. -3 + 3 = 0
Solve 2x – 3 = 3 Get the blue X by themselves. Divide both sides by 2 X = 3
Model and solve 4x = 12 By organizing your diagram it can make it easier to solve. There is one blue square (X) for three green squares (ones) X = 3
