Today we will learn about the space in between the lines of six different shapes. This space is called the area and is calculated differently for all shapes. These shapes are a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, parallelogram, and trapezoid. This video gives a great explanation about the area of shapes.
Now choose a Pokémon to catch! There will be one shape to learn from each Pokémon. When finished, click the pokeball to continue…
A wild Bulbasaur appeared! Learn the area of a circle for a chance to catch it! 2 A = πr2 r is the radius, which on the circle is the line that goes from the center, to the edge of the circle. In this case, our radius is 2 or r=2 π is a number which has a really long decimal, but we will just say it is equal to 3.14 A is the area of the circle
Try it Out Go down the list and match the left hand side to the right hand side! Match correctly to catch Bulbasaur! A number that equals approximately 3.14 Area (A) The line going from the center to the edge of the circle Radius (r) π The inside space of the circle
Try it Out Go down the list and match the left hand side to the right hand side! Match correctly to catch Bulbasaur! A number that equals approximately 3.14 Area (A) The line going from the center to the edge of the circle Radius (r) π The inside space of the circle
Try it Out Go down the list and match the left hand side to the right hand side! Match correctly to catch Bulbasaur! A number that equals approximately 3.14 Area (A) The line going from the center to the edge of the circle Radius (r) π The inside space of the circle
A wild Snorlax appeared! Learn the area of square to catch it! 2 A = s2 s is the side of the square. Let’s say this is equal to 2. A is the area of the square

A wild Squirtle appeared! Learn more about a rectangle to catch it! 3 2 A = (l)(w) w is the width of the rectangle , which is the part that is vertical. In our case, the width is 2 l is the length of the rectangle, which is the horizontal part. In our case, the length is 3 A is the area of the rectangle
Try it Out Go down the list and match the left hand side to the right hand side! Match correctly to catch Squirtle! The measure of the vertical edge of the rectangle Area (A) The inside space of the rectangle Length (l) The measure of the horizontal edge of the rectangle Width (w)
Try it Out Go down the list and match the left hand side to the right hand side! Match correctly to catch Squirtle! The measure of the vertical edge of the rectangle Area (A) The inside space of the rectangle Length (l) The measure of the horizontal edge of the rectangle Width (w)
Try it Out Go down the list and match the left hand side to the right hand side! Match correctly to catch Squirtle! The measure of the vertical edge of the rectangle Area (A) The inside space of the rectangle Length (l) The measure of the horizontal edge of the rectangle Width (w)
A wild Charmander appeared! Learn more about a triangle to catch it! Dividing by 2 is essential for getting the area of a triangle. Otherwise it is just like a rectangle! 3 A = ½(b)(h) h is the height of the triangle. In our case, the height is 3 2 A is the area of the triangle b is the base of the triangle. In our case, the base is 2
