Solar Highways A noise barrier with bi-facial PV modules Dirk van der Graaf, Workinggroup Noise Eurocities, Munchen, 14 september 2016
Noise barriers and solar energy • Many kinds of noise barriers • Most of them are just noise barriers • Some are multipurpose • A very few are producing solar energy
Solar Highways: a demonstration project • Project partners: RWS, ECN and SEAC • EU contribution of 1.4 M€ (Life program) • Bi-functional: solar power plant integrated in a noise barrier • Bifacial: orientation is east-west • Energy for 40 to 60 households (200 tot 240 MWh/year) • Start construction: 2017 • Operational: 2018
Main objective EU Project Solar Highways Grant Agreement LIFE13ENV/NL/000971: “The main objective of the Solar Highways project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility and the environmental, social and financial benefits of using multifunctional constructive elements for building highway noise barriers, in which bifacial PV solution has been integrated (with functionality independent of the highway direction). Successful demonstration will simultaneously accelerate the use of PV and noise barriers along Europe’s highways, greatly contributing to achieve the EU objectives concerning climate change, noise and air”.
Sub-objectives • Demonstration of the technical feasibility • Development of an technical-financial model • Development of a prototype with integrated double-sided solar cells. • A full-scale demonstration over a 400-metre long stretch • Monitoring during an eighteen-month practical test period • Presentation of a business case for the barrier • Communication and dissemination of the results and added value of the integrated PV modules
Location • c
Exploitation Local energy corporation: • Involvement people living nearby • Possibility of tax advantages and a better business case Alternatives: • RWS • Contractor During testing period: RWS exploits
Maintenance • Maintenance as a noise barrier • Maintenance as a solar power plant Special attention: • Dirt • Graffiti • Safety • Light reflection • Sound reflection
