Young women’s role in change • Many Started to discard the religion of their fore fathers • Drank and made merry • Demanded same freedom as those of men • Flapper Style: • Short skirts, boyish haircuts, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, talking openly about sex
Changed Attitude towards marriage • Equal partnership • Double Standard • Prior to 1920s men courted women only if they intended to marry • In the 1920s casual dating became somewhat acceptable norms • Society however tended to give more sexual freedom to men than women. • Many women drifted between old standards and new trends • Churches and schools also protested new habits.
Shedding old roles • New Role for Women at Work • More Teachers, Nurses and librarians • Clerical and office machine operators’ job • Store clerks and assembly line workers • Some became pilots, taxi drivers and oil well drillers • 10 million women were working
Shedding old roles • Changes in Family Life • Birth rate dropped at a faster rate due to wider availability of birth control information • Social & technological innovations simplified household works • Stores provided ready-made clothes • Public agencies took care of elderly and disabled
…… • Middle class women could now pay more attention to their homes, husband and children • Women had greater equality on marriage • Marriages were based on romantic love and companionship • Children were no longer working with adults
…. • College educated women found new pressure in life • Working class women still had to suffer • Rebellious adolescents created family problems • Less parental control on the teens
