Birth and Childhood • Kelly Miller was born on July 23,1863 in Winnsboro, South Carolina. • Kelly Miller was the sixth child of ten children in his family. • Miller’s father , Kelly Miller, was free and served in the Confederate army in the Civil War in 1861. • Miller’s mother , Elizabeth Roberts Miller , was a slave. • Miller went to school at a local elementary school. • Miller lived in Winnsboro, South Carolina.
Accomplishments • Kelly Miller graduated from Howard University in 1886. • Miller was the first African American to be admitted to John Hopkins University. • Miller was appointed a math professor at Howard University in 1890. • Miller began a graduate program in math at John Hopkins University.
Work • Kelly Miller studied physics and mathematics. • Miller was also an educator, essayist, scientist, and a sociologist. • Miller worked hard to be the first African American to graduate from college at John Hopkins University. • It was good for Miller to be the first African American to graduate from college because he knew how to work hard.
Death • Kelly Miller died on December 29, 1939. • When Miller died, he was at the age of 76.
