  2. Compound Machine * Formed from a set of simple machines.

  3. Friction * The force that opposes the relative motion or tendency of such motion of two surfaces in contact.

  4. Inclined Plane * A flat supporting surface tilted at an angle, with one end higher than the other, used as an aid for raising or lowering a load.

  5. Mechanical Advantage * A measure of the force amplification achieved by using a tool, mechanical device or machine system.

  6. Pulley * A wheel on an axle that is designed to support movement of a cable or belt along its circumference.

  7. Speed * Can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance.

  8. Wedge * A simple machine used to separate two objects, or portions of objects, through the application of force.

  9. Wheel and Axle * Generally considered to be a wheel attached to an axle so that these two parts rotate together in which a force is transferred from one to the other.

  10. Fulcrum * The support about which a lever pivots.

  11. Lever * A machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge, or fulcrum.
