Measures of Position and Box-and-Whisker Plots Sections 3.5 – 3.6
Measure of Position • The position of a single value in relation to other values in a data set. • Quartiles – Divide ranked data into four equal parts. • First Quartile, Q1. • Second Quartile, Q2 (Median). • Third Quartile, Q3 • Interquartile Range – Difference between Q3 and Q1.
Percentiles • Percentiles divide ranked data into 100 equal parts. • Percentile is the percent of values below a given value. • To find the kth percentile: kn/100, tells which data value is at that percentile.
Percentile Rank • Percentile Rank for a given value is the percentage of data values less than it. • To find Percentile Rank of a value: Percentile rank of xi = # of values less than xi # of values in data set • Ex: Find the percentile rank of 29,920 car thefts.
Box-and-Whisker Plot • Shows center spread and skewness of a data set. • Use 5 number summary: • Minimum • Q1 • Median • Q3 • Maximum
