Danton’s Biography • He was born on October26, 1759 in Acris-Sur-Aube in Champagne • His Father was a lawyer and a minor court official • His father died when Danton was three • Danton got his degree in law at the University of Riems • He then got a job at the office of Public Prosecutor in Paris • He was elected into the King’s Council • He left Law for Politicts in 1789 • He married a Parisian girl in 1787, named Gabrielle Charpentier

  3. Biography (continued) • The Committee of Public Safety was afraid he might emerge as a leader of the opposing side • The Committee of Public Safety soon sent him to his death by the Guillotine on April 6, 1794.

  4. Danton’s political views on the revolution • He supported the Revolution, on the things that were possible to achieve • He believed in upholding property rights • Negotiating a quick end to the war • Believed in a strong central government

Danton’s Role in the government and the Revolution • He was elected as the first deputy prosecutor of the Paris Commune in 1791 • In 1792 he was elected president of the Theater Francaise Electoral district. • He was involved in the fall of the Monarchy. • He was the founder of the Cordeliers Club. • He was the first man to speak out against Robespierre’s Reign of Terror. • He was elected into the Committee of Public Safety on April 6, 1793.
