  2. What quantities of chemicals are needed to make 3 BLTs? • The equation L +3T + 3Ba + 2Br 1 BLT, is widely used. If we are looking to discover the quantities of chemicals that are needed to make 3 BLTs, we first need to look at the ratios of ingredients to product of one BLT.

  4. The Ratios and Variables • L + 3T + 3Ba + 2Br  1 BLT • 1 3 3 2  1 (Ratios to one BLT) • X1 X2 X3 X4 3 BLTs (Variables in finding the ingredients for the making of 3 BLTs)

Solving the Equation • To solve the equation, all you need to do is find the ratios to one BLT, and then solve these ratios for making 3 BLTs. • To solve for the amount of lettuce in a BLT, use the previous ratio. The ratio of lettuce to BLT is 1:1, so the ratio for 3 BLTs is x1/3. 1 divided by one is one, so what divided by 3 is 1? 3 divided by three is 1, so the answer is three slices of lettuce to one BLT. • The same principle is applied to the rest of the ingredients…

  7. What else can I do with this supposedly useless equation? • This same process applies to how many ingredients it takes to make a dozen BLT’s. Just like in restaurants, where they may be more interested in knowing the amount of ingredients it takes to make dozens of BLT’s, in chemistry we deal with molecules in much larger numbers since they’re so small. We can apply these principles directly to chemistry, using moles of chemicals.
