Thoughts on Righteousness Luke 18:9-14
Who was this body of people who “trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt”? • The Pharisees
(Matt 16:6) “And Jesus said to them, ‘Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees’” • (Matt 16:11) “How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees” • The Pharisees
(Matt 16:12) “Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees”
(Matt 5:20) “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven” • (Matt. 6:1) “Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven”
KJV -- alms • ASV -- righteousness • NASB -- righteousness • NIV -- righteousness • NKJV -- charitable deeds • ESV -- righteousness
(Matt 5:14-16) “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” • (Matt 6:1) “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.”

A connection between Matthew 5:20 and the principles of Matthew 6:1-18 • Following Matthew 5:20 are a number of things that are on this wise: “You have heard that the ancients were told” (5:21) and “But I say unto you” (5:22) • Jesus has different standard, doesn’t He?
Three times in His cautionary advisement Jesus says, essentially, “not as the hypocrites do” (2, 5, 16). Who do you suppose those hypocrites are? • The Pharisees
Do you suppose that hypocrites might do a great many good things for the wrong reason? • Cf. Matthew 7:21-23 • Almsgivng, praying, and fasting are good things • However, done for the wrong reason • Consider it is not what was done; it was why it was done
Acts of compassion and mercy • Christians are to be involved in such • Others (Matt. 22:39; Rom. 13:9) • Brethren (1 Peter 1:22) • The “left hand-right hand” thing • Not that you don’t know what has been done • Rather, that it has been done with little notoriety! • The Lord’s point is that some do this for notoriety of men, but not you
Recent funeral • Make a short phone call • Send a card • Take some food • Go to: • The visitation • The funeral • The graveside
Praying for show • The Amplified Bible has this on Luke 18:11, “The Pharisee took his stand ostentatiously and began to pray thus before and with himself” • Matthew 6:5 has it also an ostentatious show • Ought to be in secret • Sometimes Jesus: • Prayed in secret by Himself (Lk. 6:12) • Prayed in public (Lk. 3:21)
Fasting • Apparently some prepared their appearance so others could tell they were fasting or so that others might ask if they were fasting • Jesus said, “Don’t do that!” • He said to look like you normally do • I have heard and have had others advertise that they were fasting • Why do this? • To be noticed • How else would you know unless you are told?
Summing it up: • Humility is not something associated with hypocrites and “show-off religion” • Yet, humility is something for disciples. 1 Peter 3:8 (ASV) - - “Finally, be ye all likeminded, compassionate, loving as brethren, tenderhearted, humbleminded”
