They form a network of public centers for the teaching of languages • languages taught: English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish as Foreign Language, Chinese, Basque, Catalan, Galician, and more... • there are some 300 schools • there are some 400.000 pupils • the pupils obtain official certificates (diplomas) What “Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas” are?

CARAP implementation: activities and actions • Innovation project: Language teaching and learning in a plurilingual dimension: pluralistic approaches(La enseñanza y el aprendizaje de las lenguas desde una perspectiva plurilingüe: los enfoques plurales), 2008-2009 • Working groups which prepared the following projects: • Project: “Awakening to languages” (Despertar a las lenguas) • Project: “Discover your plurilingual & intercultural abilities” (Descubre tus habilidades plurilingües e interculturales) • Workshop “Plurilingual & intercultural education: a plurilingual competence development. Approaches to language teaching & learning revision” • Oral Intercomprehension workshop

  6. Innovation project. Part 2:Language teaching and learning in a plurilingual dimension: pluralistic approaches • Workshop “Linguistic consciousness of the EOI pupils. A late awakening to languages”, coordinated by Marisa Coronado (Spanish Foreign Language teacher, EOI Madrid) This project (2008-2009) was awarded by Castilla y León government (Honour Mention for Innovation)

  7. “Despertar a las lenguas” (Awakening to languages) • Concieved as a plurilingual activity aimed at pupils of 7-9 years old • Its object is to make pupils conscious of the linguistic diversity of our society • Activity steps: • A big Europe map is painted on the floor • The children have to recognize the countries and their languages • All the children are split into “nationalities” groups (British, German, French, Italian and Portuguese), and care a “flag” sticker • They learn how to greet and farewell in “their” language • The children “turn out” to be tourists, and travel to other countries where they are supposed to greet in the country´s language. They take their “luggage” with them. • The final step consists in talking about the other countries traditions (birthday, Christmas, etc.). All the pupils sing in all the languages.

  9. “Awakening to languages”: project results • Its success and the necessity to satisfy the demand, a new team for annual implementation of “Awakening to languages” was formed from foreign languages conversation assistants and EOI Spanish foreigh language pupils • 625 pupils have participated in the project during 2009-2011

  11. “Discover your plurilingual & intercultural abilities” • Concieved as plurilingual activity aimed at pupils of 14-15 years old • Its object is to make pupils learn other languages by means of the languages they know • Activity steps: • an introductory written comprehension activity, compound of micro-dialogues in German, French and Italian, which the pupils will have to attribute to one of the languages by means of comparing frases with their English and Spanish equivalents • an oral plurilingual activity, based on the languages the pupils haven´t studied before (German, French & Italian). They will have to understand the activity, using their knowledge of Spanish & English • an intercultural activity, during which the pupils, united in groups, will assume different invented cultures and will have to behave in terms of these “cultures” rules. They will have to make them understand, to negotiate with others and to reach agreements, with respect and comprehension that other cultures should be always taken into account.
