History of Jacob’s Syndrome • Also known as XYY syndrome was first discovered in 1961, its was diagnosed accidentally when a 44 year old man was karyotyped because his daughter had down syndrome. • It was discovered and diagnosed by Avery Sandberg along with colleagues in Buffalo New York.
Description of Jacob’s Syndrome • It is a rare disease in which a male gets an extra y chromosome. • About 1 out of every 1,000 males will be born with disease. • There are no unusual physical features, so the only way you can diagnose it is with a test. • Children may have learning difficulties and delayed speech.
What is targeted • The sex chromosomes are targeted • It is when a male receives an extra y chromosome causing the person to have 47 chromosomes instead of the normal 46.
How is it transmitted • Jacob’s Syndrome is not inherited, it occurs randomly at the formation of sperm cells.
Treatment • Neurogenic Arthropathy Treatment- this helps to relieve pain and immobilization, use of crutches, splints, and braces to help mobilize the person. • Pericarditis Treatment- hepls relieve swelling and inflamation on inflicted areas such as joints.
