Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering 3ME INITIATIVE OPENING MEETING 2.00pm Friday 18 April 2008 North Staffordshire Medical Institute 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
Introduction Welcome. Keele has been awarded a 3 year EPSRC “Bridging the Gaps” grant of £285,272 to support the 3ME Initiative, which brings together broad research groups from: • Mathematics, • Geophysics, and • Bioengineering 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
EPSRC BTG Objectives: • “Initiate new, long-term collaborations between researchers across the EPSRC remit • Stimulate innovative approaches to collaboration between disciplines • Increase the cross-fertilisation of ideas and the take up of advances across the boundaries between disciplines. => A ‘people-based’programme of activities that will stimulate creative thinking to develop a multidisciplinary working environment; it is not aimed at supporting research projects.” 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
EPSRC BTG Projects First round BTG projects are running at: • Bath, Bristol, Heriot-Watt & Edinburgh, Loughborough, Nottingham, Sheffield, Strathclyde. Second round BTG projects are starting at: • Birmingham, Cambridge, Keele, QMCL, Reading, Southampton, UCL, York EPSRC will be monitoring the long-term added value of investing in BTG: eg joint publications, international profile, successful grant applications to Research Councils, European Commission. 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
3ME Specific Objectives: “1. Create an interdisciplinary environment and culture that enables Keele researchers to work together in small groups on new common interest areas 2. Host international senior research visitors to enhance the research skills of Keele and the UK's capability in medical engineering 3. Invest to start up new key collaborative medical engineering projects.” 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
Biomedical Perspective Biomedical Engineering– “a new frontier”. Expertise: orthopaedics, medical physics, bio-engineering and tissue engineering Eg: 3D tissue engineering in in vitro bioreactors and in vivo systems, fluid-structure interaction in the lung, stem cell delivery, etc Beneficiaries: patients, clinicians/NHS, industry, future of UK engineering 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
Geophysics Perspective • Expertise in: geophysical signal processing, image processing, electrical, electromagnetic, ultrasonic and seismic imaging. Clustered supercomputing and modelling of the above potentials. Data acquisition of many types. • On-going interactions: Tsunamis, multi-component surface wave propagation and dispersion for structural information. Micro-CT imaging of geological material (fossil, mineral) • Interested in: Electromagnetic and ultrasonic interferometry. Integrated inversion of combined data sets, ie ultrasonics and electromagnetic. Development of innovative instrumentation. The use of non-invasive passive noise imaging of various kinds. Immersive, interactive 3-d visualisation 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
Mathematics Perspective Relevant expertise: Continuum Mechanics, Fluids and solids; Fluid Structure Interaction. Waves in Fluids, Solids and Structures. Anisotropy and pre-stress. On-going interactions (Including discussion) Modelling of stem cell delivery via circulation, Wave propagation in arterial walls, Tsunamis, Dispersion in layered media. Tissue Engineering, Modelling of Aneurysms. What are we looking for? Interesting Joint projects, Joint PhD Students and MONEY. 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
How Bridging the Gaps works – what’s on offer? - "Researcher in Residence" posts or pairings of staff (over £100,000 “buy-out” funds available) - start-up grants (total over £50,000 available) resulting from two "sandpit" discussion meetings - Research Retreat - Regular "Back-to-Back Seminars" - International Speakers coming to Keele • Training Courses and Summer Schools for research students 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
How Bridging the Gaps works – what’s needed? • Ideas from everyone taking part – for: • collaborations, pairings, exchanges • joint projects … and publications, • visiting international speakers, • seminar topics and speakers, • training courses and events, • industrial or other user involvement. The initiative has a lot of flexibility in how we use the EPSRC funds. 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
How Bridging the Gaps works – key mechanisms 1 • People: "Researcher in Residence“: one or two researchers immerse themselves in a different research culture. We have approx 3 x 5 months full time funding available to pay for “buy-out”. • Stuff: The two planned "sandpit" discussion meetings will each reward a project put forward, value at about £20-25,000 each. • Time & Space: A residential Research Retreat over several days. Project Scoping meetings and sandpits. 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
How Bridging the Gaps works – key mechanisms 2 • Gatherings: Regular "Back-to-Back Seminars“, two 40 minute perspectives on a similar topic. • Focus: invited international visitors to Keele for about 2 weeks each – input to many activities while they’re here. • Outputs: eg a Training Course or Summer School for research students, publications, grant applications … 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me

“Meet & Eat” We have 12 tables, 12 different dishes to try, 2 chairs … and 2 minutes! Please move around the room so you meet everyone on your card. Even if you’ve met already, spend a minute outlining your research and how you want to benefit from 3ME. 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
Group Feedback Session Four groups, A to D, and a flip chart. Feed back: • Common ideas or problems to tackle? • Suggestions for 3ME activities, events, speakers, outputs? • Questions? 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
What happens next…? • Seminar Programme • Researcher in Residence proposals • First Sandpit meeting and proposals • Invitations for international visitors • Workshops • Planning Retreat 3ME Initiative - Modelling Methods for Medical Engineering www.keele.ac.uk/research/3me
