  1. Welcome to My Class

    Mrs. Steed 2010-2011
  2. My name is Mrs. Lyn Steed and I have been teaching for over 35 years. I have taught many different grade levels. I live in Villa Rica with my husband, Matt, our dog Missy our two cats, Spook and Miss Lucy. I love to watch football and baseball, movies, read, listen to music (Classic Rock) and garden. My favorite place to go on vacation is the beach. I am so excited to start a new school year. I have many new ideas for instructional activities and projects. I am looking forward to creating a community of lifelong learners.
  3. Goals for 2010 -2011 To provide a secure learning environment. To stimulate each student’s desire to learn and foster a positive attitude toward school. To promote mutual respect among students and staff. To organize activities that give students opportunities for success and to challenge them to improve skills, to be an active participant in learning, and use a variety of learning styles and intelligences. To encourage students to take responsibility for their actions both in academic performance and personal behavior. To score at or above grade level on the Georgia Writing Assessment and the CRCT tests

  6. Cooperative Learning I wholeheartedly believe in cooperative learning in the classroom. I place my students in mixed ability groups so that they may help each other during the learning process. Working in small groups helps students learn valuable social skills they will need throughout life. I welcome the opportunity to discuss cooperative learning with anyone who has questions or concerns. I've had great success with this technique in recent years, and I'd love the chance to convince anyone of the benefits of cooperative learning!

Class Procedures Heading on papers: top right hand corner Name and assigned number Date Subject page number Entering the classroom: unpack book bag, hang coat, turn in homework folder, make lunch choice, sharpen pencils, and begin morning warm ups. End of class dismissal: Wait until your group is asked to go get book bags and coats, quietly pack book bag with needed materials for homework, and wait for your bus to be called.
  8. Procedures Lining up to leave room: Wait until your group is called, quietly line up, keep your hands and feet to yourself. Center Time: Only 4 students at a center at one time, work together quietly, and leave materials as your found them. Bathroom: Get the pass, go quietly, complete your business, and return to class.
  9. Class Rules Be prepared for class by having all your materials and books. Follow directions the first time they are given. Turn in assignments completed and on time. Treat everyone and their property respectfully. Listen when someone is speaking.

  11. Stoplight Behavior Management System Each student has a number, and each person's numbered pocket contains strips of colored paper. Everyone begins each day on green. If a class rule is broken, the color changes to yellow, which is the first caution. If another behavior problem occurs that day, the color will change to orange, the second caution. Furthermore, the student will have to complete a Time Out worksheet explaining their inappropriate behavior and how they plan to correct the problem. These forms will be sent home to parents to be signed and returned. The color red is reserved for very severe discipline problems and results in a phone call home or a trip to the office.
  12. Mid-morning Snacks & Water Consumption I have found it beneficial for the class to have a mid-morning healthy snack. Only send enough for one day, and please don’t send snacks that need refrigeration. Please do not send in sweet or sticky items like cake, brownies, frosted cookies, or cupcakes. I also permit my students to bring a water bottle to keep on their desks during the day and to use at recess. Plain water is the only beverage permitted, and the bottle must have a secure lid. Water bottles should be taken home regularly to be cleaned.

  14. Student Work Class work: expected to be completed in the time allotted, work will be checked, but not all work will receive a grade. Homework: expected to be completed at home, will be checked in class, receive a weekly homework grade. Portfolio: Students will pick several papers a week to go into their portfolios. FRDIDAY FOLDERS: folders will come home on Fridays with the work your child completed during the week. Please go over the papers with your child. Sign the sheet and return on Mondays. Student Agendas: agendas will come home daily with homework assignments and special projects your child has been assigned. Behavior for the day is noted. Please initial and return daily.

  16. Extra Stuff Breakfast -$1.00 a day Lunch - $1. 75 a day Media Center: students may check out two books at one time, unless we are working on a research project. Book Clubs: Each month, brochures will be sent home for students to buy books. This is optional. All checks should be made out to the school. Please refer to the school’s Student /Parent handbook for other policies.
