Data Analysis System (DAS) Begin by accessing the system at: http://nces.ed.gov/das
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Mission – • To make the data collected on education available to the public • Provide indicators on the status and trends in education • Report on the condition of education to Congress, state policymakers, educational practitioners, the media, and the public • Assist states and school districts in improving their statistical systems • Review and report on education in other nations
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) On the web… • Surveys and Programs • Publications • Data http://nces.ed.gov
Most Popular Majors http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=37
DAS is not PAS!!! • In PAS… • The rows are individual institutions • User defines the columns by selecting other IPEDS variables • The DAS… • Is a table generator • Which produces aggregated data • The user creates or modifies table parameter files (TPFs) by tagging: • Row variables • Column variables and specifying • Spanner variables, Filters, etc.
The DAS Web Site • The vehicle for public access to education survey data collected by the U.S. Department of Education. • Comprehensive source for tables, findings, and reports generated by NCES researchers. • Data Analysis System On Line (DASOL) enables users to generate their own tables.
Tables Library • Includes tables from • NEDRC Tables • Analysis Reports Tables • ED TABS • IPEDS Tables (including Compendium and State tables) • Search NCES Quick Tables
http://nces.ed.gov/dasol/ There are many tables available to you online Take a few minutes to look through these tables—they may be handy in the future
These are tables that have not necessarily been included in published reports. NCES keeps track of requests from the field and makes the information available to others through this service.
Analysis Reports • Includes links to the full text of reports and the tables, figures, and table parameter files (TPFs) used to produce the reports • Published Reports • Reports in Progress Look!
The Tables and the TPFs from these reports are also available for you to download. TIP: The TPFs can be modified to create similar tables for a specific group of interest.
You can download any—or all!—of the tables as Excel files Let’s look at a hot-button issue
We’ll search for postsecondary tables with “degrees” in the table title You can also use DAS to access the Quick Tables published by NCES
Many of these tables are based on IPEDS data—for example, number of degrees conferred to Black, non-Hispanics…
Look at the structure of a DAS table: Table Title Column variables: average price of attendance average tuition and fees Row variable: region Spanner variable: level of institution Note: Rows are repeated for each level of the spanner variable.
Access Applications • Access the DASOL Application at http://nces.ed.gov/dasol/ • To Create Tables
Return to the main menu at http://nces.ed.gov/dasol/ and click “To Create Tables.” “To Create Correlations” is not available for IPEDS data.
Postsecondary Institution Data is IPEDS data; the other categories reference data from other NCES surveys
IPEDS data is available in DAS for 2002, 2003, and 2004. This is adjudicated data that can be used to generate national, regional, and state totals and averages.
Alternatively, you can access the DAS applications for specific datasets using the pull-down menu.
IPEDS in DAS • Generate totals and averages • National • Regional • State • With adjudicated IPEDS data • 2004-05 • 2003-04 • 2002-03
Steps for Creating a Table • Specify row variables • Specify column variables • Specify qualifying values, if necessary • Run the resulting table parameter file (TPF) The process of selecting your variables is called “tagging.” A tag tells DASOL how to use each variable in building the table.
List of Variables Organizational Framework and Search Capabilities
Note the menu bar. Survey and year are specified. Online Help is a great resource for learning to use DAS Online! These are the categories available for 2004. More variables are available for earlier years, and more will be added for 2004 as the adjudication process is completed.
The directory tree structure of the variables list expands to show the variables that are stored under each of the major headings. A “plus” sign indicates there are variables listed under the heading. Once the heading is expanded a “minus” sign indicates the list has been expanded.
Tagging Variables Rows, Columns, Spanners, Filters, and Qualifying Values
DAS Online Exercise #1 The first exercise shows you how to create a simple table of total headcount enrollment by Carnegie Classification and save the table parameter file (TPF) to your drive. The top section of your report shows total headcount enrollment by Carnegie Classification, and the bottom section shows the number of schools in each classification.
Select a Tag TIP: There is a wealth of documentation included in the Variable Information tab of the Description Window.
