  1. BRYT Island – Brjótum múrana Valgerður H. Bjarnadóttir Former project manager

  2. BRYT Island 1985 - 89 • The situation in Island was different • Gender equality projects a new thought • Little/no unemployment • Another discourse – The Women’s Alliance – women taking active part on their own premises • Akureyri – a small town in Northern Island • 15000 inhabitants • Women’s/feminist politics since 1982 • Industry and schools

  3. BRYT – the manager - 1985-89 • The project managers’ background and future visions affected the choice of projects • Social worker – educated in Norway • Politician – feminist politics • Born and raised in the town • Single mom • Intrested in the female – male (im)balance expressed in myths, history and dreams.... 

  4. BRYT projects 1985-89 • Girls’ choice of education • Life long learning - women who wanted to change their fate • Women entrepreneurs • Women in leading positions in “big” firms • Sexual harassment • Equality consultants

  5. Outcome • New knowledge – old “myths” challenged • New ideas – put into action in the coming years.... But change takes time... And sometimes the ones to realize the dreams don’t even know where they come from • Womens’ learning centre • Equality consultants • Women entrepreneurs - Auður – Brautargengi • Gender segregation in the University

  6. Gender Segregation - University 2002

  7. Gender in high schools/collage

  8. Gender and occupation

  9. What now? • Women are 1% of the top leaders in Island • Women’s part in politics is insecure (Faeroes, Sápmi, Island) • Women are “dominating” in almost all fields of Universtity education • Women are 10% of professors • Men on paternity leave “empty” the funds • Patterns are changing, but POWER seems to linger on the male side....
