Charles C. Ngugi MALF Kenya DEVELOPMENT OF FISH FARMING IN KENYA Email: cngugi@africaonline.co.ke Mobile: 0723 55 77 60
“Technologies” Developed Include: • Pond design, construction and management • Feed formulation and production using locally available raw materials. Evaluation of - 3 strains of Nile tilapia suitable • Organic and Inorganic fertilizers and feed application rates.
Cont… 4. On-farm trials disseminating technology • Training farmers, university students and extension workers -included training evaluation 6. Commercialization of small-scale fish farming (Enterprise Budgeting)
1. Pond Design, Constr & Mgt • Hands-on training on pond construction methods and mgt techniques. • 2-3 three-week short courses conducted for University students, Fisheries personnel and fish farmers. • Capacity building -Construction of research and production ponds both at Sagana and Moi University • Individual farmers assisted to construct a considerable number of small ponds
1996 1999 1996 2004 2004 • Benefits: • More and better research and production ponds -Sagana and Moi University • Capacity built for tilapia and catfish research and production • Increased fish farmers pond surface area
Weather Station, Hatchery and Feed equipment for Research and Training
2. Feed Formulation and Production using locally available raw materials: Observed that: Benefits: • Simplified feed mixer - feed pelleting machine • Increased fish prod, farm income employment opportunities resulting from better pond mgt Farmers using costly feed received low returns. Cost of feed and fertilizers was ~ US $ 0.25 - needed to develop cheap locally made feeds
3. Organic and inorganic fert/ feed appl rates and strain evaluation: • Determine least-cost combinations of feed and fertilizer • Three strains of Nile tilapia evaluated to determine their culture characteristics. Stocking of tilapia rose from 1/m2 to 4/m2 Benefit: • Provided data on the comparative value of fertilizers and low-cost supplemental feeds • L. Victoria strain had highest growth performance -Dev of more efficient prod strategies through use of best strain in Kenya • Provided the basis for the dev of more efficient prod strategies for pond systems in Kenya and similar areas of Africa
4. On-Farm Trials Disseminating technologies to fish farmers: • On-farm testing -adopted as a logical step in transferring research based technologies to farmers • Farmers from central and western regions selected to participate in the on-farm trials
Best Farmers Rewarded for highest revenue Results of the On-farm trials • Average increase in fish harvested 330% (3.5 MT/ ha as compared with just over 1 MT prior to trials) • 2/3 of the ponds gave net revenues exceeding US $ 3,333/ha/ yr/; average -US $ 4144/ ha/yr
5. Training Farmers, University Students and Extension Workers: Benefits: • Enabled extension workers to train potential farmers on the economic viability of fish farming • Resulted in increased awareness of fish farming as an avenue for wealth creation in rural areas Aim was to train quality fisheries managers, and farmers to better manage aquatic resources and increase pond production
Spin offs include: Emerging Markets - Bait fish Production, small scale hatcheries, commercial fish farm - Dominion - and Cage Culture trial in Lake Victoria
Continuing Research • Growth and survival of Clarias gariepinus • Breeding and propagation of all male tilapia • Trials on Lung fish culture • Culture trials with Red tilapia • Graduate students thesis work on catfish • Development of fish farmers Clusters
Future Research and Outreach Directions : • Develop short course on feed formulation and choice of inputs. More on-farm trials required • Government continue to train extension officers and provide sufficient opportunities to facilitate frequent visits to farmers • Farmers field days, Sensitization workshops and annual farmers conference
Future Research and Outreach Directions : • Selective Breeding Programme to develop fast growing strains • Further work on quality seed and feeds • More documentaries, manuals, brochures and other outreach methodologies • Increased efforts - farmers clusters for better extension, pond fish production and marketing
