Dispensing Optician • Project Description • WA State Dispensing Opticians Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee formed 1998 • Statewide Dispensing Optician’s standards developed • Based on skill standards for Dispensing Optician • Approved by WA State Apprenticeship and Training Council • Approved by WA State Department of Health
Dispensing Optician • Project Partners • Employers: Costco, Group Health, Sears (Cole National), WalMart, LensCrafters, Independents • Labor: United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1001 • College: Highline Community College, Des Moines, WA • Government: WA State Department of Labor and Industries Apprenticeship (L&I) and WSATC
Dispensing Optician • Program Development • Skill Standards, Competencies developed • Common problem=training needs of industry • 2 career pathways: school only or OJT only • Developed new pathway=Dispensing Opticians Registered Apprenticeship
Dispensing Optician • Program Implementation • 6,000 hours OJT • 144 hours instruction per year • 2 apprentices to 1 licensed Optician ratio • Completion can take licensing exam • Successes: More diversity, Higher pass rate on licensing exams, Better quality and consistency of training employees
Dispensing Optician • Project Challenges • Volunteer committee members overworked • On-line classes, mobile labs for rural regions • CEO, National level support • College degree only pathway supporters • Image of apprenticeship not “professional” • Suspicious of government programs • Lack of funding to support growth, prove value and develop sustainable programs

Health Unit Coordinator • Program Development Challenges: • Difficulty recruiting enough HUC • Current in-hospital training not standardized • Lack occupational competencies • RNs were doing too much HUC work Solution: • Develop apprenticeship to address challenges • Done by Partnerships
