MenuStart Here Drink Later Quit An individual who enjoys drinking wine more than most, this would be the person you ask... "what kind of wine goes best with filet mignon and bourbon peppercorn sauce?“ Disclaimer- wine can be subjective to the type of glass or where it comes from. Please use these guidelines as just that- guidelines. Opening Opening Wine Tasting Wine Red Wine White Wine
Wine Basics The rule of three: Look at these three V’s when selecting wine. All will be on the bottle of wine. • Vintage –the year the wine was created • Varietal- the grape/type of wine it is • Vineyard- where the wine is created Once you find what type of varietal you like best, start there to make your selection. One bottle (750ml) of wine= four normal glasses
Opening Wine Use a double hinge wine opener. This will make opening bottles hassle free! • 1. Cut off the foil around the top lip of the wine. This is to get to the cork. • 2. Stick the sharp point of the wine tool into the top middle of the cork with a quick force at first, then gently twist till the screw of the wine tool is ¾’s the way in. This should be where you can use the first hinge of the wine tool. • 3. Pull up with the first hinge till you can use the second hinge. Do NOT bend cork as you pull it out. This can break the cork.
Opening Wine Continued • 4. Grab the cork with your wine tool together as you pull the cork out and gently twist both together as you pull up. This will give a kiss sound and avoid a pop that can be considered rude or unprofessional. • 5. Unscrew cork from wine tool and place beside wine glass. These rules do not apply if you have a twist off top. A twist off top has no meaning of the quality of wine. Fine wine makers are going green and preserving trees that make corks and using twist offs!
Tasting Wine Once wine is opened a taste is necessary to ensure the quality. It is not uncommon to have a bad bottle of wine in each case. • A. Pour a small amount of wine into a wine glass • B. Smell the wine- figure out what the wine smells like (what vegetables, fruits, floral, minerals you can pick out) • C. Swirl the wine- notice the color • D. Taste the wine- see if you taste what you smell
