  3. Internet is used for many other things like… • Access Email • Pay Bills • Video Conferencing • Software Downloads • Accessing school materials and Virtual Classrooms • Social Networking and Forums • The list and possibilities are as vast and endless as the Universe!!!

  4. How do we know that we are safe…?? • …and not being phished! • …and not being scammed! • …and not downloading an infected software from a fake website!

  5. The answer is…Secure Socket Layer • SSL is a standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. • This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remains private and integral. • It is a protocol developed by Netscape.

  6. Certificate Authority • They review applications for new certificates and approve the ones which passes their requirements. • Trusted Root CA store is where all our trusted sites are stored by the browser.

  9. Advantages • Encryption • Server authenticated • Easy Setup • Ensures authenticity of the website.

  10. Disadvantages • SSL expires! • Increased Load • It does not require client identification. • Additional client-side requirements • For a user (not familiar with web development), installation of SSL technology can be complicated

  11. Conclusion • When it comes to securing your transactions on the web, it is always safe to use trusted methods of transactions. Thus, SSL is one technology which ensures you are indeed getting what you subscribed for. • So look for the padlock and be safe!! Happy Surfing!!
