  2. Karma • Karma is the law that every cause has an effect i.e. our actions have results. This simple law explains a number of things: in the world, why some are born with disabilities and some gifted, why some live only a short life. Buddhists believe that are past actions have an effect on who or what we are in our next life.

  3. Types of Buddhism • There are many different types of Buddhism, because the emphasis changes from country to country due to customs and culture. What does not vary is the essence of the teaching — the Dhamma or truth. • Theravada Buddhism, the school of Buddhism found in Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar & in part, Indonesia, Vietnam & Malaysia.Mahayana Buddhism, the school of Buddhism found in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Vajrayana Buddhism, the school of Buddhism found in Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Mongolia.Jodo Shin Buddhism or Pure Land Buddhism mainly from India, JapanZen Buddhism went into China during the 6th century as Chan. From China, Zen spread south to Vietnam, to Korea and east to Japan.

  4. Important People • The Dalai Lama was born Lhamo Thondup on July 6, 1935 in Taktser, China. At age 15, he assumed political power of Tibet as the Dalai Lama. The People's Republic of China invaded that same year. Fearing assassination, he and thousands of followers fled to Dharamsala in northern India, where they organized an alternative government. Since then, the Dalai Lama has taken a number of actions in hopes of building a free Tibetan state within the People's Republic of China.

  5. Important People • Siddhartha Gautama, who would one day become known as Buddha ("enlightened one" or "the awakened"), lived in Northern India during the 6th to 4th century B.C. While scholars agree that he did in fact live, the events of his life are still debated. According to the most known story of his life, after trying different teachings for years, and finding none of them acceptable, Gautama spent a fateful night in deep meditation. During his meditation, all of the answers he had been seeking became clear, and achieved full awareness, becoming the Buddha.`

  6. Basic Beliefs • 1. There is pain and suffering in life. • 2. This suffering is caused by people's desires and cravings for unnecessary things • 3. People can end the suffering by stop doing what causes the suffering • 4. People can stop craving unnecessary things by following the eight-fold path.

  7. What is Meditation • Meditation is a way of controlling your mind and blocking out all your thoughts for even a few minutes so that you can focus on.. nothing. • By concentrating on nothing the goal is to see that all of our wants and needs and issue are just an illusion (called maya) which in the grand outline of things which don't matter.

  8. Important Dates • In 563 BC Siddhartha Gautama was born. • In 483 BC Siddhartha Gautama died. • The 14th Dalai lama was born July 6, 1935. • He still lives today.
