This project aims to improve geodetic leveling through online submission of benchmark resets, software development for data processing, and training initiatives. Building on existing capabilities, the goal is to scale up ties to CORS and HARN networks, ensuring accuracy and accessibility. Gestalt principles guide the approach, emphasizing the relationship between data, context, and tools. By developing XML schemas, linking to relevant software and utilities, and providing data validation checks, this initiative will streamline the leveling process for better data management and public access.

The problem • Unlike the horizontal network, we have no way (like CORS) to monitor our level network. • We need new levels to HARN, CORS, tide gauges, etc and to maintain the existing bench marks. • Ties must be made to a network that has not undergone systematic analysis and maintenance.
Building outside capability • Mr. Curt Smith’s BM reset document will be published soon. • Software to reduce digital level observables into NGS-specified file formats has been developed by Mr. Malcolm Archer-Shee. • Leveling training has taken place in Corbin!
Remaining preliminary work • We must consolidate our information on geodetic leveling and make it available to the public. • Develop an on-line benchmark reset submission web page. • Use our experience with the page to scale up to ties to CORS and HARN.
A Gestalt approach • There are three parts to the definition of gestalt: a thing, its context or environment, and the relationship between them.
To be done • Develop an XML schema for leveling. • Add links to software and documentation • Add links to utilities (e.g. TRANSLEV) • Add facility to import an edited set of observations created from manufacturer file to NGS compliant format using TRANSLEV. • Add facility to run compliance checks. • Validate completeness of data • Link to description software
