Dorchester Middle School Reading Test • Pupils are allowed 15 minutes reading time and then 45 minutes to complete the test. • The reading booklet will include a range of different text types – e.g. poems, stories, explanations, interviews, diary entries, information report. • Children are encouraged to highlight and mark the texts as they read. They can refer to the reading booklet throughout the test. • No part of the reading test may be read to the pupils other than the instructions. • The reading test is worth 50 marks (half the overall marks).

Dorchester Middle School Handwriting • Assessed in the longer piece of writing. • The focus is on whether the handwriting is consistent, legible and fluent (joined up). • Handwriting is only a small % of the marks available (up to 3 marks available out of a maximum of 50 for the writing tests).

Ask questions about the text, why the author chose those particular words, what they think will happen next, whether they like/dislike the text and why. • Write for a purpose and a ‘real’ audience-thank you letters, emails, messages, a journal/diary.
