  6. 1 Minute

  7. Time’s Up!

  8. Let’s get to know each other • Each speaker, please • Introduce yourself and your group

  9. What will we do this semester? • A lot! • This class is full of important information • It is high-density class. • We will cover fundamental topics • Switching • VLANs • NAT • DHCP • Etc • You will have the opportunity to build important skills • I think the course is interesting and fun (in a geeky way)

  10. Resources • Course Web site (check it often) • http://www.cabrillo.edu/~gbrady/cis83.htm • Blackboard (where all your hands-on assignments and quizzes get posted) • http://online-cabrillo.blackboard.com • Forum (for you to help each other) • http://opus.cabrillo.edu/forum/ • CCC Confer (for online meetings and lectures) • http://www.cccconfer.org/index1.aspx • Course Syllabus (that is our contract) • http://www.cabrillo.edu/~gbrady/cis83syllabus.pdf

  11. Cisco Curriculum • Cisco Online Curriculum (your weekly reading assignments) • http://netacad.cabrillo.edu/ • CCNA 3 (first half of the semester) • CCNA LAN Switching and Wireless • Also referred to as Exploration 3 • CCNA 4 (second half of the semester) • CCNA Accessing the WAN • Also referred to as Exploration 4

  12. Weekly Structure • Reading Assignment – first exposure to concepts • Weekly Reading Quiz – testing for understanding • Weekly Class Meeting – team work, consolidate understanding • Weekly Online Meeting – focus on hands-on concepts • Weekly Hands-on assignments – develop skills • This is where you will spend a lot of your time. You cannot learn to ride a bicycle by studying a book. You need to do it. You need to fall to know what not to do and what to do.

  13. Expectations • "I missed class... did anything important happen?“ • "Will you please e-mail me whatever I missed?“ • "Do I have to come to class today?" • Well?

  14. Did I Miss Anything? • Nothing. When we realized you weren't herewe sat with our hands folded on our desksin silence, for the full two hours • Everything. I gave an exam worth        40 per cent of the grade for this term        and assigned some reading due today        on which I'm about to hand out a quiz        worth 50 per cent • From: Tom Wayman : Poems • Complete poem at: http://www.library.utoronto.ca/canpoetry/wayman/poem5.htm • What is my point? • You need to be here for every class, you need to be on time and you need to do your work, and you need to follow the class policies as stated in the syllabus

  15. Who is Responsible? • Take for instance the case of the homeowners in Pennsylvania who lost a $500,000 lawsuit to someone who broke into their home. When the robber left their house he tried to escape through the garage. The automatic door opener was not working, however, and since the door to the house had locked when the robber shut it, he was stuck in the garage. He spent eight days living on a can of soda and dry dog food. He was awarded that $500,000 for his “undue mental anguish.” • The robber broke the law and violated the homeowners’ property rights and still thought he had the right to compensation for anguish brought on by his own illegal behavior. • … a jury awarded a woman $780,000 after she broke her ankle when she tripped over a toddler running inside a furniture store. The store had to pay for her pain even though the running child was her own. • Source: http://wichitaliberty.org/role-of-government/winning-lawsuits-how-being-irresponsible-pays-off

  16. Who is Responsible for Your Learning? Source: http://www.oncourseworkshop.com/

  17. Successful Students

  18. You are in Charge • When you miss class it is your choice and your responsibility. • When you do not turn in your assignments, there was a choice along the line. • I hope you choose self-responsibility. • Have a great and fun semester!

  19. To Do • Read Exploration 3 – Module 1 before our online meeting • Register for the Forum • opus.cabrillo.edu/forum • Check your Blackboard account • Log in to NetLab to make sure you have an account • netlab.cabrillo.edu • be sure I give you your user ID and the password • Be sure to ask if you have questions • one of my most successful students asked me more questions than I thought possible…. • chances are, if you have a question, somebody else has a similar question • If you received an ADD CODE register immediately!
