Virginia Weight of the StateConference on Obesity October 3-5, 2011 Henrico SNS Director, Tim Mertz (A.K.A. Dr. Food) introduces new social media campaign- www.DrFood4U.com. This site offers links for monthly student menus, newsletters, related polls, surveys, videos and pictures. This site also hosts the interactive ‘Virtual Menu” which allows stakeholders to preview daily menus (specific for Henrico). Just click and drag from the selections within entrees, salads, vegetables, fruits and milk/juice onto the blue tray to discover their nutritional information. Menus are posted for entire month at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Greg Riggs with ‘Field of Dreams Farm ‘shared the Farm to School connection with Henrico SNS.
Walk to School Day atCrestview Elementary 10/5/2011 Leading the walk is First Lady of Virginia Maureen McDonnell. Walking to Crestview E.S. Healthy Grab n Go Breakfast awaits the students from School Nutrition Services. Gathering before the walk. Dr. Food (a.k.a. Henrico School Nutrition Services Director ,Tim Mertz) greets the students as they pick up their breakfast. Students select their Grab n Go breakfast. Spending time together before their day begins. Following their walk to school, Crestview students had a day of health and wellness. SNS invited students to create their own healthy reimbursable meal with food models. Family Fun and Fitness NightBaker Elementary School October 20, 2011 WIC Dietetic Intern, April Payne, shares nutrition information with Baker elementary students. Field Supervisor, Jo Jackson, engages student in Fear Factor. Asian pears, fennel and turnips were offered to sample Baker elementary cafeteria employee, Connie Harlow, invites students to create their own healthy school lunch. Baker students have fun learning about Dr. Food and the Virtual Menu at www.Dr.Food4U.com. The Virtual Menu allows students to preview monthly menus. Once a student has selected the days entree, they simply drag the individual components onto a tray and nutritional information is displayed. This information includes calories, fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, sodium, iron, Vitamin C, calcium, and Vitamin A is available for review. This new tool will be especially helpful for students with dietary concerns and athletes trying to “bulk up”. April Payne gathers Fear Factor surveys from students and parents to learn more about their preference for new foods sampled.
