HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, depends on an enzyme called reverse transcriptase in order to multiply. Reverse transcriptase reads a molecule of RNA and creates a molecule of DNA from it. A molecule of AZT, the first drug approved to treat AIDS, has a shape very similar to (but a bit different than) that of the DNA base thymine. Propose a model of how AZT inhibits HIV.
Hold Your Wee for a WiiThis was a title of an actual radio contest about 10 years ago. Contestants were to drink as much water as they could—without going to the bathroom and without throwing up. The winner got a new Wii. The “winner” in this case was a young woman with two kids. She drank about 1 ½ gallons of water in a matter of about 20 minutes and took the Wii console home. Before she could give the Wii to her kids, she unfortunately had a seizure, collapsed, and died. Be prepared to tell me why she died.
