  2. The Octopuses Habitat • They live underwater. • They live in dens. • They live in rocky caves, coral reefs, and shipwrecks. • Some small octopuses live in old seashells.

  3. Physical Characteristics • They have suction cups. • They have eight arms to help them swim frantically underwater.

  4. How their Physical Characteristics Help Them to Survive. • They have suction cups to stick to rocks and coral. • They have eight legs to swim frantically underwater away from predators.

  5. Behavioral Characteristics • An octopus can hide behind things and turn the color of it, which is called camouflage. • They dig underground. • The octopus lays her eggs on the roof of her den.

  6. How Their Behavioral Characteristics Help Them Survive. • It uses camouflage to escape from danger and to blend in with things nearby. • They dig underground to hide or find some kinds of food. • She lays her eggs on the den to protect them while she’s in there.

  7. The Octopuses Inherited Traits • The same pattern. • The same colors. • To guard their eggs.

  8. The Octopuses Environmental Conditions • They use their suction cups to hold onto the ocean floor. • They change colors to match the coral and rocks too. • They blend in with the sand so when their food swims above them they swim quickly to catch it.

  9. Learned Behavior of Octopuses • They learn how to hunt. • They learn how to swim with their tentacles underwater. • They learn how to find a shelter.

  10. Did You Know?! • The word octopus comes from the Greek language and octopus means “eight-footed one.”
