  1. Math Assessment October 21

  2. Components of Math Curricula • Reading Skills • Vocabulary and Concepts • Numeration • Whole number operations • Fractions and Decimals • Ratios and Percentages • Measurement • Geometry (Salvia & Hughes, 1999) This sequence is important to enhance conceptual understanding

  3. Beginning Skills • Whole Number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – core of elementary math curriculum) • Readiness includes: 1-1 correspondence, counting • Vocabulary and concepts – quantitative words (same, equal, larger) and spatial concepts (left, above, next to) • Numeration: Writing and identifying numerals, counting, ordering etc.

  4. Assessments Used in Math • See-write (frequently used) • See-say (most infrequently used) • Readiness, Vocabulary and concepts, numeration and applications – matching format used; 90-95 % accuracy benchmark most often used • Computation, fluency and accuracy are often stressed at this level. Doing so does not always allow to see why students may be scoring 80 percent accuracy

  5. Assessing Fluency in Math • Probes – samples of behavior • Ex: in a single-digit number addition assessment a student might be given on five such problems • More useful assessment measure: number of correct digits in an answer written correctly per minute • Not the number of correct answers per minute

  6. Students with Motor difficulties • Better assessed with… • See-say rather than see-write • Using see – write assessments they may • complete addition and subtraction problems at 50-80 digits per minute • Complete simple multiplication and division at 40-50 digits per minute (salvia & Hughes, 1990)

  7. Advanced Math Skills • Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, ratios and geometry • These build on whole-number operations • Accuracy is stressed over fluency except for a few math facts: H =0.5 = 50 percent

  8. Why do we Assess Math? • Diagnostic testing: Strengths and weaknesses • Readiness for instruction in math • Have students mastered math facts and concepts? • For planning instruction and intervention • Eligibility decisions

  9. 5 Content Standards Numbers and operations Algebra Geometry Measurement Data analysis and probability 5 Process Standards Problem-solving Reasoning and proof Communication Connections Representation National Council of Teachers of Mathematics identify…

  10. Specific Diagnostic Math Tests • Comprehensive Math Abilities Test (CMAT) – individually admin; norm-ref- broad: reasoning, calculation, application For children ages 7 – 0 to 8 -11 mths. • Raw scores transformed to standard scores, mean of 10; std dev of 3. • Group Mathematics Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation (G-MADE). Group admin. Norm-ref, standards based test. Strengths and weaknesses in math skills grades K-12 • 9 levels of this test

  11. Specific Diagnostic Math Tests • STAR Math: - quick, accurate estimate of students’ achievement levels in math; used to monitor progress overtime • Norm-referenced, computer-adaptive math test that gives info about instructional levels as well as their level of performance relative to national sample.
