In the Time for Kid’s article, The Price of Ivory, by Suzanne Zimbler, the author explains the reasons why the African elephant is one of the most endangered animals in the world and how conservationists are working to protect them. • The article begins by explaining that African elephants are being killed at the fastest rate in history. Some areas in Africa have lost over 60% of their elephants to poachers, illegal hunters that kill for the illegal ivory trade. • The author describes the rise in elephant killing is due to various Asian countries, like China, where ivory is turned into statues and jewelry that sell for lots of money. • Zimbler explains that many of the people buying these goods do not know that an elephant was killed for the ivory. In 2012, there more than 30,000 elephants killed in Africa. In the 1980’s over 1,000,000 elephants were killed. • The article concludes by explaining several ways conservationists are working to help protect these incredible creatures including passing laws to stop the illegal trade, educating people about where ivory comes from, and training more rangers.
