Shuksan Community Family Night: Parent Survey Group RatheanyDoschin, Sarah Eadon, Cydney Jones, Amanda Squires
Background • Annual event held at Shuksan Middle School • Target populations • Families within Shuksan • Families who have graduated to Squalicum High School • An environment for inclusivity and community building
The Event • Student workshops • Parent workshops (our focus) • Internet Safety, Supporting Your Child’s Academic Success, Raising Respectful and Responsible Kids, and Gang Prevention • Interpreters available for four languages • Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, and Punjabi
Methods • Focus of study: Shuksan Community Family Night • How successful was it in reaching its objectives? • Were the attendees satisfied? • Sample: parents of Shuksan students • Instrument: surveys • Distributed separate surveys after Session 1 and Session 2 with questions regarding the individual session • The survey for Session 2 also included questions about the event as a whole
Analyzing the Data • Data was entered into Excel spreadsheets • Calculate the frequencies from each session • Ex: Raising Respectable & Responsible Kids (RRRK) Session 1 separate from RRRK Session 2 • Calculate the frequencies from the event as a whole • Frequencies put into graphs to visualize results
Results What was the best part of the event? What was the worst part of the event?
Results I feel more connected to the school after attending this event. I feel welcomed by the school.
Results I feel supported by the community. I enjoyed the Community Family Night.
Recommendations for the Event • Overall organization of the event • Lack of understanding of who should be doing what and when • More planning meetings and communication between Western students and Shuksan • Interpreters available at welcome table, childcare check-in, etc. • More reliable equipment for interpretation • All sessions should have information that families feel is relevant • More supervision in student sessions • Keep student and parent sessions separate • Some parents attended the student sessions which limited conversation
Weaknesses of the Evaluation • Surveys were optional • Some sessions have more completed surveys than others • Some surveys were not filled out correctly • Variations in data analysis • Data analysis was not complete: lack of graphs and percentages • Information was entered incorrectly • Short time frame to analyze the data
Conclusion • Most important findings • About half felt the sessions were the best part of the event, while about half felt the sessions were the worst part • Over three-quarters said they felt more connected to the school • Most important recommendations • Stronger event organization • Improve interpretation services • More supervision in student sessions • More time for data analysis
