SENSOR SOLUTION TIPS Presented by: Javad Mokhbery (President)
CHALLENGES • NO 1 sensor fits all applications • NO easy selection guide • NON-compatible instrumentation • NON-standard = long delivery + high cost • NO good results if mis-installed
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES • Define Requirements • Pick the right sensor provider • Handle & install sensor properly • Use Smart Sensors • Proper Maintenance (use verification system)
1. DEFINE REQUIREMENTS • Define application • What are you measuring? • Static / dynamic • Define package size • Define environmental conditions • Define load conditions • Define extraneous load & moments • Define interfacing requirements
2. PICK THE RIGHT SENSOR PROVIDER • Qualifications • Experience • NOTE: Sensor solution company should be able to support you long-term
3. PROPER HANDLING & INSTALLATION (DONT’S) • Do NOT tamper with sensing areas • Do NOT drop • Do NOT carry unit by cable or apply excessive pull on cable. • Do NOT overload sensor • Do NOT use 4-conductor cables for distances over 20 ft
3. PROPER HANDLING & INSTALLATION (DO’S) • Do monitor output during mounting and installation • Do use stable power supply and prevent high voltage surges • Do turn the power on • Do apply load in specified direction • Do avoid dirty or loose electrical connections and follow correct wiring code. • Do use remote sense wires when cable length > 20 ft • Do use flat, parallel and clean mounting surfaces • Do respect required clearances – avoid friction • Do use proper torque and mounting hardware • Do use TEDS
4. USE SMART SENSORS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheet) • Simplifies the interfacing of sensors • Facilitates multiple sensors w/ 1 instrument • Defined by Template per the IEEE 1451.4 • Minimizes / eliminates errors in scaling & calibration • Will NOT require a specialized technician for setup
Do NOT exceed max excitation voltage Do NOT operate over the rated capacity Do NOT exceed safe overload Do NOT exceed operating temperature Do NOT expose to radiant heat 5. PROPER MAINTENANCE (DONT’S)
Do verify 5. PROPER MAINTENANCE (DO’S)
5. PROPER MAINTENANCE (DO’S CONTINUED) • Do use a sensor verification • Assures sensor accuracy before critical tests • Helps define Re-calibration Intervals • Provides a sense of reassurance • Limits variables if a test goes wrong
