  3. Ageing Policy in Wales the Story so Far…….. Policy context Policy context

  4. The older population of Wales stands at around 38% and rising! Strategy Phase 3 will be about • A strong voice and real choice for citizens • The prevention agenda • That “little bit of help” • And will involve people/stakeholders/citizens/service users/carers, et al, at all stages of its development

  5. Timetable • Summer 2011 – 2,500 survey forms completed. • December 2011 – First stakeholder meeting • March 2012 – Second stakeholder meeting • Summer 2012 – Focus groups • Autumn 2012 – Consultation launch • Spring 2012 – Strategy launch

  6. Strategy Phase 3 • Well being • Poverty • Age Friendly Communities • Contribution and Participation

  7. Housing • Most older people want to remain in their own homes and value services that help them achieve this, such as home care, befriending, social opportunities in their communities and neighbourhoods. However • A significant proportion would welcome the chance to move to more suitable housing.

  8. Problem neighbours – • “I don’t feel safe in the communal areas of our flats and have seen lots of drug raids and things so it’s frightening. But the council says that’s not a reason to prioritise moving me but I see empty places in nicer areas. The wardens side with the youngsters and don’t see how it is a problem for me. It makes me sad every day.” Olive, 87

  9. Ageing Policy in Wales “The Welsh approach seems to be the most coherent long-term commitment to improving the position of older people of any administration in the UK in the last decade”. IPPR (2009)

  10. And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years” Abraham Lincoln • Any questions? • If you want to be involved contact • Andrea Nicholas-Jones • 02920825191 • Andrea.nicholas-jones@wales.gsi.gov.uk
