1. Engineering Design • Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Standard 1.1 1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem Research the problem Redesign Communicate the solutions Develop solutions Select the best solution Test and evaluate Construct a prototype Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 1 Identify the problem Write down the original problem here. Student - Design, build and program a robot to: push another robot out of the arena. What constraints have been placed on your team? (Deadlines, resources etc.) deadlines, cooperation Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1http://nxtprograms.com/castor_bot/steps.html Site 2http://nxtprograms.com/mini_sumo/steps.html Site 3 http://gmitweb.gmit.ie/transitions09/strap.php What did you learn from your research? A instead of a lift, use a ramp B cover the sides C plant the wheels under the robot Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION • Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below. • Cover up the sides so no one can get under us • Ramp instead of lift • MUST BE ABLE TO TURN Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment. Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your first prototype will look like. -Look like a tank, all covered up so no one can get under us -Big ramp on front to flip others -Wheels under base, covered up completely -Low, balanced
Step 5 Construct a prototype Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a computer program for your robot. Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 5 evidence 1st Prototype picture and computer program
Step 6 Test and Evaluate the solution(s) • Does your robot work? • Did it perform as expected? • What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? • Does it meet the original design constraints? • Is it safe? • Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 6 evidence 1st modified prototype picture and computer program
Step 6 evidence 2nd modified prototype picture and computer program
3rd modified prototype picture and computer program Add additional slides as necessary
Step 7 Communicate the solution(s) Provide the YouTube link of your video that shows how your robot meets the challenge. YouTube video link : Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
• Demonstrate the ability to use technology for research, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
