Let’s get together! Can improved integration in the classroom between international and domestic students lead to better learning outcomes for all?
Presenters Julie Barnabyj.barnaby@leedsmet.ac.uk Helen Thompson h.thompson@leedsmet.ac.uk
The course BA (Hons.) Accounting and Finance Typical intake 200 students per year Partnership with Sino British College (SBC) , Shanghai SBC students study final year of degree in the UK (usually around 60 students)
Background to the study • Our experiences in the classroom • Prospect of significantly increased intake of students from SBC in September 2013 (120 students potentially joining our final year of 160 students) • Analysis of student performance – significant drop in semester 1 marks for SBC students, tends to recover to an extent in semester 2
Thought we had better do some reading…….. • Key themes emerging • Not just induction • Need for active management • Importance of informal curriculum • Engagement of home students
What have we done so far? • Pre-arrival survey • Focus group with completing SBC students • Integration Champions • Events • Student reflections • Social Networking • Evaluation of impact of events – on students, staff, admin colleagues
Reflections/early findings • Organisational barriers , e.g. timing of exams • Mixed responses • Some surprising elements • Need for constant interventions • Conflict in our roles as researchers and participants?
Next steps • Continuing to work with the students • Focus groups early semester 2 • Earlier engagement with existing second years • Tutor engagement • How to measure ‘improved learning outcomes’?
Questions • And any advice you can offer!
