Goals of the SDB-MPP • To provide an improved and integrated decision making framework for air pollution management at local government level • Move towards reduction in air pollution to meet health based air quality standards • To achieve improved quality of life for the local community
Statistical Basis for Concern • WHO reported that 20 % of ill health in poor countries and millions of deaths can be attributed to environmental factors including climate change and pollution.

Sustainability of the MPP • City commits to funding operational requirement of plan • Cost recovery model based on polluter pay principle designed • Plan not in conflict with economic development and cleaner production • Increased social well being, integrated solution to negative health effects
Sustainability of the MPP • Learning centre established in the eThekwini Municipality • National department of environmental Affairs to use model of MPP to institute AQMP for Vaal triangle and other areas. • eThekwini Municipality offering capacity building and technical support to KZN province and other Municipalities
Conclusion • MPP approach to air quality management in particular and environmental management in general represents a strategic approach to resolution of environmental management issues. • Institutional foundation established to meet other env. Management challenges such as our response to climate change, alternative forms of energy use, waste management and cleaner forms of production.
